Thankful for Another Season

Wow! Another season in the books! We don’t know how to thank you enough for your support. Please know that without you, our work wouldn’t have purpose, so from the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
Now it’s time for us to rest and recharge. Over the coming months, we’ll be paging through seed catalogs, choosing just the right varieties to bring you the foods you love most. Planning for next year begins now and continues through winter, though at a much slower pace!
Wishing you a blessed and happy holiday season. Stay healthy, and we’ll see you in May with fresh asparagus!

An abundance of FOOD

To say that the time between our last update and this one is the busiest season on the farm might be an understatement! If you’ve visited us at any of the markets we attend, you’ve seen it—the tables are overflowing with farm-fresh goodness in every color imaginable.
The cantaloupe have been sensational, and the tomatoes are flying off the shelves! We still have plenty to offer, including sweet corn, melons, tomatoes, and so many other summertime favorites. Unfortunately, there’s one item we’ve sold out of: beef. But don’t worry—we’ll have more available next season starting in May.
Be on the lookout for our beautiful, large red peppers - always a hit in the fall months. And soon, as the cantaloupe finish (likely in about two weeks), we’ll begin bringing in fall squash and gourds.
We’ll continue at the Dane County, Green Bay, and Fond du Lac Farmers Markets through the end of October. Our daily stand in Ripon will close for the season sometime during the first week of October.
Stay happy, stay healthy, and we hope to see you soon!

Tomatoes have arrived

Finally, one of the best times of the year in the fresh vegetable world has arrived: field-grown, vine-ripened tomatoes are here! Is there anything better in summer? Nothing beats a dinner of sweet corn and BLTs!
It’s also time to start thinking about canning your salsas, sauces, and anything else tomato-related. Bulk tomato boxes will be available starting next week, and the supply will only grow as the month goes on. Don’t forget—we also have green peppers, jalapeños, and red and yellow onions to round out your recipes.
Tomato varieties include Roma, red round, and yellow round. We’re also hopeful for a few heirloom varieties later in the season.
The market tables are absolutely bursting, so be sure to stop by one of our many locations! Right now, we’ve got:
Sweet corn, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower—so much Wisconsin goodness!
The cantaloupes are coming along nicely, too— they just need a little more time.

Summer is arriving

The transition from spring to summer vegetables has begun! Thanks to a very cool spring, we’re running about two weeks behind, but the crops are looking great. The recent warm and humid weather has really helped move things along. We may not love the heat and humidity, but the warm-weather crops certainly do!
Green beans were the first to arrive, followed by zucchini. Up next: sweet corn, green peppers, and onions, which should be ready in about a week. Be sure to watch for updates on social media—we're expecting to open the Ripon corn stand on July 26th.
We know many of you are eagerly awaiting tomatoes and cantaloupe—and we don’t blame you! The good news: they’re looking fantastic. The not-so-good news: they likely won’t be ready for another month. Since we grow everything outdoors and are still about two weeks behind, we need a bit more warm, humid weather to help them ripen.
Thank you for your continued support—we look forward to seeing you at one of our many outdoor farmers markets!

Wrapping up at the Farm Store

As we enter the final week (our last day is Saturday, June 21) of being open at the farm store, we want to take a moment to thank all of our amazing customers for coming out and supporting us. We truly enjoy seeing you and having such great conversations!
Asparagus season is winding down, and strawberry season is just getting started. We hope to have both available through the end of June. Our fresh **greens - spinach, lettuce mix, and arugula - **continue to be beautiful and abundant, so keep us in mind when you're making your next super salad!
Next up: BROCCOLI! We’ll begin picking our first heads on Tuesday this week, and once it starts, it usually doesn’t stop. Our sugar snap peas and English shell peas are in full bloom and should be ready in about 10 days.
Everything in the field is growing—just slowly. We’re in desperate need of heat! At this point, we estimate that everything is about two weeks behind due to multiple cool days. Fingers crossed for a very late frost at the end of the season. After all, we all want to enjoy as much Wisconsin goodness as we can!
Stay happy and healthy!

April Showers Brought May ASPARAGUS!

As the weather warms up, so does our selection of fresh vegetables! We’re excited to let you know that our farm location is now open Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with asparagus, fresh greens, and Black Angus beef available.
Starting May 24th, you can also find us at the Madison, Green Bay, and Fond du Lac Farmers Markets on Saturdays. (We also attend the Wednesday Dane County Farmers Market!)
We plan to stay open at the farm through the end of June—or until Mother Nature says otherwise. The strawberries are blooming, and we’re hopeful we’ll have a few to sell this season. Unfortunately, this past winter was tough on the plants due to very cold temperatures and a lack of snow cover.
The broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are thriving, and the sugar snap peas, sweet corn, and green beans are all up and waiting for consistently warm weather.
Thank you for your continued support—we look forward to seeing you at the next market!

Slow Start to 2025

Hello! First, let us start by saying we are so happy to be back in the fields! That being said—does anyone remember last spring? Above-normal temperatures, lots of sunny days, and perfectly timed rain, preceded by a winter that was mild with just the right amount of snow cover.
Well… none of that is happening or has happened this season so far. Consequently, we won’t have any produce to sell for a while yet—we're keeping our fingers crossed for mid-May. By then, we should have some asparagus, our meat freezers will be restocked, and the spinach, lettuce, and arugula won't be far behind. So, the word for this time of year is patience—Mother Nature has decided we need a lesson in that!

We have planted the first broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage transplants. Also, the first spinach, spring mix lettuce, and arugula seeds have jumped out of the ground. Even the first sweet corn and sugar snap peas are planted but have yet to make an appearance.
Speaking of making an appearance, our Black Angus beef herd has produced 22 calves at the time of this writing. They are adorable and so much fun to watch frolicking around in the pasture.

Here’s hoping for consistent, average weather—a farmer's best friend! We hope to see all of you soon. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for regular updates: @greenbarnfarmmarket

Last chance for Madison

Season Wrap-Up
As we approach the end of another wonderful growing season, we want to start by expressing our heartfelt thanks to all of you. Without your support and love for fresh, nutritious food, our work wouldn’t be possible. You are the reason we put in the long hours, face the challenges of Mother Nature, and keep pushing forward. From the bottom of our hearts – thank you!
We have one more market this season, which will be held this Saturday, November 9th, around the Madison Capitol. We'll have a selection of fresh produce available, including broccoli, spinach, mixed lettuce, arugula, red and green peppers, jalapeños, and fall squash. We hope to see you there so we can thank you in person and wish you a joyful holiday season!
See you all in the spring!

October Update

Fall has arrived

As we transition into fall, so do our vegetables. While we say goodbye to summer favorites like sweet corn and green beans, we're now treated to delicious red bell peppers, hearty spinach, and sweet squash.
At the time of this update, we have yet to experience a killing frost, so we're still harvesting vine-ripened tomatoes and bell peppers from the field. Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage thrive in this cooler weather, so you can expect plenty of those throughout October. In early September, we planted spinach, mixed lettuce, and arugula, and we're excited to offer a fresh salad bar at the local farmers market. Be sure to check it out!
The Green Bay and Fond du Lac farmers markets have just two Saturdays left, while the Dane County Farmers Market will run for four more Saturdays and Wednesdays. We still have plenty of beautiful, nutritious, and delicious vegetables available, along with a great supply of Black Angus beef. Be sure to stock up at the markets—because who wants to settle for grocery store vegetables?
Thank you for your continued support throughout the season. Let’s finish strong!
