SUPER SeptemberHappy Labor Day! We hope you’re able to sit back, relax, enjoy time with friends, and indulge in some great food!
As we flip the calendar to a new month, our thoughts may start turning to all things autumn. However, here on the farm, we're still deep in summer’s bounty. If you’ve been putting off canning tomatoes, don’t worry - we still have plenty available! Summer is still in full swing at our locations, with cantaloupe, watermelon, sweet corn, green beans, and many other delicious treats. The first sign of the season’s change is the debut of red bell peppers this week! Keep an eye out for them. Our beef supply has been limited lately due to the county fair season, as our processor spends the majority of August and part of September handling fair animals. But don't worry - the next full freezer of beef will be ready on September 21, and we have two more processing dates lined up, so there’s still time to stock up! We’ll continue working hard on the farm to bring you nutritious and delicious farm-raised food. Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook @greenbarnfarmmarket for all the latest updates! TOMATO SEASON IS HERE!It's hard to think of winter months when you are in the middle of the dog days of summer, but now is the time to put up tomatoes for winter. If you like to make salsa, stewed tomatoes, or just some sauce, we have everything you need. Right now, the tomatoes look great and are coming on strong. We have red round and Roma tomatoes, and there are even some yellow tomatoes available for those who need a little less acid in their diet. Additionally, we have red and yellow onions, green peppers, and jalapeños. We should start to see red bell peppers in another three weeks. It is our professional opinion that the field-grown tomato season will be great but potentially shortened due to the excessive rain, heat, and humidity this season. Also, everything this season is running about two weeks early. So don't procrastinate—get your canning done sooner rather than later. Ask at one of our locations about tomatoes today.
Sweet corn continues to be a delicious treat. We pride ourselves on picking it fresh and delivering it to you as soon as possible. Speaking of delicious treats, the cantaloupe should be ready in another two weeks! Finally, our beef supply has been a little low lately. The processors pause taking local farm animals this time of year so they can accommodate all of the county fair animals and the kids who work so hard at raising them. Our freezers will be full again on August 24th, and we still have ground beef available. Stay happy and healthy, and we hope to see you at one of our many locations! The limited selection of produce we had in June has turned into a cornucopia of vegetables in July. The biggest excitement is the start of sweet corn season. Our daily produce stand (open 10 AM - 5:30 PM) on the corner of Oshkosh and Stanton Streets will be open starting Tuesday, July 22. There, you will find sweet corn, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, green peppers, red and yellow onions, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. We will even have a limited selection of Black Angus beef products available. Remember, everything there is grown right here on the farm—no buying and selling—we are a producer-only farm stand!
Tomatoes will be making their debut in approximately two weeks. Please remember us for your canning needs; we will have large quantities of romas, rounds, and heirloom tomatoes. If you are a salsa maker, we also have large quantities of jalapeños, onions, and green (red in the fall) peppers. We are so thankful that, for the most part, the excessive rain did not seem to harm the crops. Fingers crossed that the weather remains benevolent and we can continue to bring our fantastic customers wonderful and nutritious things to eat. We hope to see you at one of our many locations! Isn't it crazy how last season we would have given anything for this rain, and now this season it is simply too much? Welcome to farming! We are thankful that, despite the rain, things on the farm are looking really good.
Asparagus, spinach, spring mix, and arugula will continue through the end of June. We have our very first strawberries for sale at the farm today. There will be a very limited supply of the berries for about two more weeks, after which we should have a larger supply. The farm store will be open until the end of June. Sugar snap peas, English peas (in the pod), and broccoli will be the next crops to come into season. Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook, where we regularly update what is being harvested. Our beef sales are strong, and we are so glad to receive positive reviews. The freezers will be full again on June 21st. Our ground beef is 85/15 and only $4.79/lb, and we have plenty in supply—not to mention it tastes great! If Mother Nature continues to be reasonable, we should have a great season of keeping you fed and full of nutritious, delicious food. The Height of Summer VeggiesThe long, hot days and barely-in-time rains have led to an abundance of vegetables on the farm! The long-awaited sweet corn season has finally arrived, and it looks and tastes great. Make sure to get some at one of our many locations. We have seen the first vine-ripened tomatoes and onions. Green and jalapeno peppers have also arrived - salsa season is upon us!
Although we needed to say goodbye to the lettuce, spinach, and arugula season, we are excited for all the summertime favorites. Currently, we have broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, sweet corn, and the cantaloupe is not far behind. Our corn stand in Ripon, on the corner of Stanton and Oshkosh Street, is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, where you can find all of these treasures. We will be stocking our meat products at the Ripon stand daily, beginning in a few days. Although we will be out of steaks until mid-September, we will still have burgers, roasts, stew meat, and soup bones. Thank you for your continued support! Asparagus season is rapidly coming to a close but the greens (spinach, spring mix and arugula) are really beautiful and will be available for at least a couple more weeks. Next up: sugar snap peas and broccoli.
We are done selling asparagus at the farm location and will return to our location in the city of Ripon (corner of Oshkosh and Stanton Street) near the end of July. There we will have sweet corn and all the other farm fresh vegetables that you love. Another exciting update is that we are planting strawberries this month with high hopes that we will be able to offer them for sale next June. It takes a bit of luck and a bunch of skill to get them to market so we will keep our fingers crossed and work hard! We sell black angus beef at our Ripon location and the farm markets in Madison and Green Bay. Don’t worry farmer Tom will be back in Green Bay before the end of this month! Keep hoping for regular rains. It is so difficult on all of the farmers when it doesn’t rain consistently, or at all. Knowing where your food comes from is such a wonderful thing.
